Welcome to the Ohio Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star! If you are looking for a way to do something for others, and have a great time in the process, you are at the right place. We are a fraternal organization that is always on the lookout for adults of all ages who are trying to better themselves and the community around them.
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
How many of you are familiar with the “Hymn of Promise”?
In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree;
In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,
From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,
Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
These lyrics let us all stop and think. They say that it is a time for change, a new beginnings and a future that is unknown until it is time.
So, the year 2015 is an exciting time for change!
Steve and I have been very busy this year planning for an exciting year for the membership of the state of Ohio in 2015. Today, we are pleased share with you our goals, plans and projects in the hope that each of you will join with us as we begin a season of change.
We will continue to support the Scottish Rite Learning Centers for Dyslexia, DeMolay, Jobs and Rainbow for Girls youth organizations with encouragement of participation by adults to serve as board members. Are you all aware that many of our youth organizations are not surviving due to the lack of adult participation? So, what are you doing to ensure their future? Let’s find some time to volunteer to help with a project, being a mentor or a board member to support the youth of today for a better tomorrow.
Everyone reading this letter today has had a family member or friend affected by cancer or heart. One of our goals for 2015 is to hope that our charitable purposes will be recognized beyond our Order. We hope that you will look beyond your doors to reach out into your communities to participate in a walk or directly donate to a charity of choice.
The Benevolence Fund is not one our designated charities, but is essential to the welfare of our members. This fund was established to help our members in times of medical or economic emergencies. Please give prayerful thought to support this worthwhile fund by the means of a sunshine fund or chapter donation.
The Ohio Eastern Star Home Capital Campaign continues to grow in donations so we may begin the construction on the four new neighborhoods for our residents and bring our Home into the future with beautiful changes that will polish our diamond, Our Home. In sharing our support for the OES Home Capital Campaign together with the 2015 OES Home Project by offering up for sale a T-Shirt and Mug Package for $20.00 that will be split 50% for the Capital Campaign and 50% for the OES Home Project. We hope you will join us wearing your T-Shirt on Saturday June 27 at the OES Home as we kick off the OES Homecoming Weekend with a tailgate party theme for Charities Extravaganza.
Sisters and Brothers, the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron project for our Ohio Eastern Star home is an ice cream stands for our residents and visitors. This will include a soft serve ice cream machine, cart and all of the supplies needed to start up and keep the ice cream stand supplied. You know it will be one of the first stands on the OES Home Main Street. Our goal is to raise $25,000. This will enable us to purchase the ice cream cart and machine as well as the supplies. This cart will be placed in the dining room until the new neighborhoods are completed then it will be placed on the Main Street Boulevard Street of Shops.
The Chapter Excellence Program continues in 2015 to complete the sounding block program that was created by PGM Barbara Pelfrey and PGP Ron Keller and continue in 2014 by our PGM Gail and PGP Steve. Together with the Membership and Public Relations committee we have awarded over 65 sounding blocks in 2013 with additional to be awarded this 2014 Grand Chapter Session. We encourage each member of each Chapter to look how you may be able to better involve your membership.
We will continue to support the Ritual Competition that is held annually at Grand Chapter. This gives individuals an opportunity to demonstrate their outstanding ritual work and be rewarded. PGP, Ken Scott will continue to supervise the competition.
This year we have made significant changes to the traditional Schools of Instruction. Previously there have been regional schools or 14. This year there will only be 4. Each of these schools will be held on a Saturday making it easier for our working membership to attend. The decision to downsize to fewer Schools of Instruction was based on attendance of membership over the last 3 year period. Folks, our membership is shrinking, officers are repeating the top four offices more frequently than ever before. So let’s embrace this change and come together to show our pride and embrace the future for the Order of Eastern Star in Ohio.
The Line Grand Officers together with the Appointed Grand Officers and Deputy Grand Matrons will be visiting each District during January and February to educate and inspire our members and officers during an individual District Educational Opportunity, formerly called SOS. We encourage you to attend as this gives members the chance to meet our Grand Line Officers in an informal setting, please keep checking this website for the dates, times and locations for your individual districts.
Have you ever wanted just to kick back and find your inner child? We know everyone likes to take a break, a vacation from daily chores and work. So join us as we travel to Walt Disney World in Florida from February 9 – 13, 2015. Detailed information may be found on a brochure located under the News & Information section on this web site.
Our membership loves to see the Grand Officers perform the ritual work. We are hopeful the Worthy Matrons & Worthy Patrons and officers of subordinate Chapters will take this opportunity together with their corps of officers attend these Exemplification meetings. Two of these sessions are being held early on in the Inspection Calendar. So, get excited, The Ceremony of Initiation will be exemplified three times by the 2015 Grand Officers. These dates are:
March 21 Northland Masonic Center Columbus
March 28 Western Reserve Masonic Community Medina
August 3 Springfield Masonic Community Springfield
Susan and I will be reinstituting the Masonic Ambassador Program which Sister Barbara and Brother Ron started in 2013. We have made a few changes using the Masonic Districts (25) - having (2) Ambassadors for each District plus having (5) Lead Ambassadors each being responsible for 10 Ambassadors. Their goal will again be to make presentations to the Blue Lodges in their assigned districts and communicating what Eastern Star is all about.
We are all facing many challenges within our Chapters. How do we grow? How do we revitalize our Chapters? It is at this time we announce the formation of the Chapter Health Check – Up Committee that will be doing a study analysis of our Chapters. The purpose of this committee is to find new ways to better be of service to our members and Chapters. This committee will consist of Members, DGM's, LGO, & PG's and will be representative from across the state.
Sisters and Brothers, it is at this time that the seeds of change goals have been planted. We look forward to each of you celebrating the Our Living Tree in 2015 as we make sure to accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves and for the Grand Chapter of Ohio.
